PERSONAL SAFETY
   CHOOSING A RESPIRATOR
To select the appropriate respirator, one must know the contaminants from which they need protection. Details on various substances can usually be found on the MSDS if the contaminant is a raw material used in production. If the contaminant is some type of by-product of a work process, more extensive investigation as to what the contaminant is composed of may be required. Once the contaminant has been identified, it is necessary to determine its concentration by performing air sampling in the work area.
Some other factors to take into account when choosing a respirator are the length of time the worker is exposed to the contaminants, specific conditions at the workplace, whether the workplace is indoors or outdoors, other types of personal protective equipment that is being used and whether chemical exposures may occur at the workplace.
Taking these findings into account, there are two types of respirators from which to choose, with many types of cartridges and filters that are used to block various gases and/ or chemicals. These cartridges fit both half mask and full facepiece type respirators. The half-mask respirator follows the contours of your face and fits over your nose and under your chin. It grants you a wider field of vision than a full facepiece respirator and allows
you to wear most types of eyewear along with the mask. Full facepiece respirators fit under your chin and over your head, and provide the same protection as a half-mask respirator. However, a full facepiece respirator protects your eyes and face from airborne particles, chemicals and gases that could damage a worker’s eyes.
